What's a Shoebox Hamper?

A shoebox hamper is just that -- a small food hamper in a shoebox, thoughtfully prepared for needy youth in downtown Victoria.

The emphasis is on food for hungry teens to help them think better, stay healthy and make good choices for themselves.

In recent years churches, groups and individuals have prepared thousands of boxes which were distributed through our street ministry, providing a helpful way for people to individually express their concern for the youth.

Such practical expressions of love enrich relationships in which the youth feel accepted where they are, but cared about too much to be left there. Ultimately, they get a glimmer of the love God has given us for them, and a sense of how much we value them, have hope for them, and desire to see them fulfilled in Christ.

As we try to form healthy, healing, helping relationships with the youth, giving a needed gift goes a long way to winning their trust, which is the foundation from which all ministry grows.

If you are interested in helping in this way, here are some suggestions to help you but the main principle to follow is to put as much nonperishable food as you can afford or can squeeze into a shoebox.

 Suggestions for Shoebox Hampers

 It's pretty straightforward:

Just fill a shoebox about 3/4 FULL OF FOOD (if possible) with non-perishable, easy-opening items.

 Chocolate bars, Cookies

Small pack of peanuts, Small packs of crackers with cheese,

Plastic spoons, fork or knives as needed Small packs of Kleenex Small note pad and pen

Toiletries? We usually have leftover supplies of personal care items, so please limit toiletries.

Please, NO ASPIRINS, GRAVOL, OR ANY OTHER MEDICINES.

Small notes of encouragement such as – “God bless you!” or “Hi, I am praying for you today!” – are much appreciated.
